Legend of a Man

There once was a man
An ordinary man
Born into an ordinary life
but he had an extraordinary heart
For his heart
It was made of gold

Now this may seem wondrous to you
But it was not
It was a burden
A burden he was unaware of
But still had to carry

For each day, his heart beat stronger
and with each heartbeat
the gold slowly infected him

It coursed through his veins
It infected his bones
It withered his mind
It clouded his sight

As time passed
He lost sight of his friends
He lost sight of his family
He lost sight of everything
Except his visions of gold

And these visions filled his mind
Until he forgot about all else
and could not think beyond
Finding more gold

And find it he did
He found it in towns
He it in cities
He found it in places
which no one else thought to look

The people marvelled at him
and were amazed at his ability
To find gold
In all the places he did

But he did not hear them
He did not see them
He did not think of them
For he did not care
Since they were not made of gold

He wandered near and far
By day and by night
In search of a glimpse
Of that which so consumed him

They say he died one day
Empty and alone
Lost in the wilderness
They say he died of thirst
On the edge of a lake
A lake he could not see
For it was not made of gold
